Dubai Basketball U18 Elite team forward Gustav Vilcans played an important role in Latvia’s historic run to the FIBA U16 EuroBasket 2026 title, helping his national team secure its first-ever championship at the tournament.

The 16-year-old forward made an impact throughout the competition, averaging 8.4 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game across seven appearances. Vilcans was also trusted with responsibility on the court, averaging 24 minutes per game as Latvia progressed through the tournament unbeaten.

Latvia opened its campaign with three impressive victories in the group stage, defeating Italy 82:70, Türkiye 88:63 and the Czech Republic 95:80 to finish strongly at the top of the group.

Their momentum continued into the Round of 16, where Latvia produced one of the tournament’s most convincing performances, defeating defending champions Serbia by 40 points (99:59) to book their place in the quarter-finals.

Latvia then overcame Greece by 10 points in the quarter-finals before securing another statement victory against Spain, winning 92:87 in the semi-finals to advance to the championship game.

In the final, Latvia completed its historic campaign with a 69:75 victory over France, officially claiming the nation’s first-ever FIBA U16 EuroBasket Championship.

Vilcans’ performance throughout the tournament highlights the continued development of Dubai Basketball’s young talent, with the forward gaining valuable international experience while representing Latvia on one of Europe’s biggest youth basketball stages.
